The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres is a non-profit organization  with locations around the world named after Swami Sivananda of the Himalayas, one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century. It was founded in 1957 by his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda, a renowned authority on Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Its purpose is to propagate the ancient teachings of Yoga and Vedanta as a means of achieving physical, mental and spiritual well being and thereby create a more peaceful world. Sivananda center
button  Sivananda Yoga – the way to physical and mental health
The Sivananda training system aims to retain the vitality of the body and decrease chance of disease by simply and naturally cultivating the body and mind of the practitioner. What makes us special? We teach classical yoga, which takes a holistic approach: Sivananda Yoga class is a traditional, slow paced, meditative class that helps encourage proper breathing, flexibility, strength and vitality in the body while calming the mind. Because Yoga is a spiritual system with a physical component, this non-competitive approach helps the practitioner gain much more than just a healthy body. Sivananda Physical
button  History
Upon the instruction of his guru, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, India, Swami Vishnudevananda headed to the West and began teaching throughout the United States in 1957. He established the first Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Montreal, Canada, in 1959. There are now almost 80 Sivananda locations (ashrams, yoga centres, and affiliated centres) around the world.
The Yoga Teachers' Training course was established due to Swami Vishnudevananda’s vision for world peace. In 1967 he taught the first Yoga Teachers' Training Course in the West. Since then, over 25,000 teachers worldwide have graduated from this comprehensive training course. The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres are recognized worldwide for teaching yoga authentically, preserving its purity and tradition, which dates back several thousand years.
The goal of this training programme is to produce qualified and inspiring yoga teachers who are able to draw on their own practice and personal discipline in imparting the yoga experience to others.
History
Swami Vishnudevananda retained India’s traditional Gurukula teaching system in which students and teachers live together in an ashram (centre for yoga and meditation). Through the direct contact with experienced teachers, the student’s day-to-day life during the course is transformed into a learning experience. Students advance both physically and mentally and enjoy a comprehensive yoga experience, which they can later transmit to their own students. In efforts to create the most favourable conditions possible, this training is offered as an intensive course in an ashram. Certified by the worldwide Yoga Alliance for the 200 hours standard for Registered Yoga Schools (RYS).
