VIPARYAYO MITHYAA-JNANAAM ATAD-ROOPA-PRATISTHAM 'Erroneous understanding is a false conception of an idea or object whose real nature does not conform to that concept.' Commentary: The second type of 'vritti', erroneous understanding, may also be based on a perception of an external object, but in this case the mental image does not correspond to the reality of that object. This may be caused by faulty perceptions, incorrect analysis of perceptions, or distortion of perceptions by the ego. It is like the mirage in the desert but is very common in daily life. Very often judgment is passed on a person or situation when there is no relationship between reality and the mental impression.
