SIVANANDA YOGA FAQ
Q. Give me a very simple, but very impressive proof for the existence of the soul.
A.

You say in daily life, "My body", "My Prana", "My mind", "My Indriya". This clearly denotes that the Self or Atman is entirely different from the body, the mind, the Prana and the Indriyas. The mind and the body are your servants or instruments. They are as much outside of you as these towels, chairs, cups are. You are holding the body just as you are holding a long walking stick in your hand. You are the possessor or proprietor of this body. The body is your property or possession. The body, the senses, the mind, etc., are not the soul, but belong to it.

Q. Why does not the benevolent, kind and all-merciful God help the righteous man and give him happiness? Why does He leave him to the mercies of his Purva Karma?
A.

Karma is likened to the wheel. It has to work out; because the force that set it in motion has to be spent. It is a cycle of action and reaction. Just as the arrow once discharged from the bow cannot be withdrawn, even if the hunter feels that he has aimed at a wrong target, Prarabdha Karma, the fruit of those Karmas performed in previous births that have come up for experience in this present birth, cannot be annulled.
How then does God help His devotee? The all-merciful God does help His devotee by strengthening his will-power, his power of endurance, to bear the Karma-Phala with a cheerful countenance. The devotee is certainly not left to the mercy of his Purva Karma; he is beautifully clothed in the protective shield of His grace. Just as in the worst winter and violent storm, you remain unaffected in your own house and in your warm clothing, the devotee (though to the onlookers he is poor, sick or suffering) does not feel that he is suffering at all and is ever happy and blissful in His remembrance.

Q. What is the difference between Japa and meditation?
A.

Japa is silent repetition of the Name of the Lord. Meditation is the constant flow of one idea of God. When you repeat Om Namo Narayanaya, this is Japa of the Vishnu Mantra. When you think of the conch, disc, mace and lotus flower in the hands of Vishnu, His ear-rings, the crown on His head, His yellow silken Pitambar, etc., this is meditation. When you think of the attributes of God such as omniscience, omnipotence, etc., this is also meditation.

HATHA YOGA TIP

VRKSASANA - TREE - A standing balance posture - Beginner and intermediate level
Sanskrit: vriksa or vriksha (वृक्ष, vṛkṣa) meaning "tree" and asana (आसन) meaning "posture".

Begin by standing straight and focus on a spot in front of you. Transfer your balance to one leg while breathing slowly and standing firm on the foot. Lift the other foot to place it flat on the inner thigh of the standing foot. Use your hand to help place the foot in the correct position. Your knee will be bent at a right angle to the standing leg. Keep the standing leg straight to keep balanced.

Second step: When securely balanced, release hand from foot and place both hands in prayer position at the chest. Keep the bent leg lifted and keep the chest open. The body should be straight with no lean to one side.
For the third step in this asana, lift the arms while inhaling and hold straight arms still in prayer position above the head. Keep the palms together and the standing leg firm.
Repeat with opposite leg bent in tree pose.

Tip: To help balance, spread the toes of the standing foot and stand with weight equally on the heel and ball of the standing foot for balance. The straight vertical position of the body, the neck and arms will help with the balance as well as the focus on a fixed point in front of you. Keep the arms next to the ears. For a beginner, looking in a mirror initially while performing this asana may help to correct your own body alignment. Practise deep breathing in this pose.
To take this asana to an intermediate level, the above steps are followed but the foot is placed in a half lotus position on the top of the thigh of the standing leg. Keep the arms extended above the head while breathing rhythmically. Practice deep breathing. The eyes may be closed for further concentration and practice of balance. Repeat with opposite leg in bent position.

BENEFITS:

Strengthens the leg and back muscles
The bent leg opens the hip joint
Improves balance
Keeps the mind focused and improves concentration
Brings feeling of inner peace
Very conducive to meditation

This yoga asana is an edited contribution for the Sivananda Gurugram partly sourced and edited from the Sivananda Publication : "Yoga: Your Home Practice Companion" – Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre – 2010.

RAJA YOGA

From Discourse III: "Vibhuti Pada- On Divine Powers"

III.18. SAMSKARA-SAKSATHKARANAT PURVA-JATIJNANAM

'By perceiving "samskaras"(subtle impressions) comes knowledge of the previous birth'.

Commentary:

When 'samyama' is performed on the 'samskaras', or habitual impressions of one's mind, knowledge of past births comes. This is because of the Karma that must be worked out in this life depends on the impressions carried over from past lives that were not dealt with at the time.

VEGETARIAN CUISINE

CORN FRITTERS

This recipe utilizes chick pea flour and whole wheat flour with corn for a tasty snack item. Can be served with chutney. Makes 24- 30 small fritters.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup chick pea flour (besan flour)
2 ¼ cups fresh corn kernels (cut off cobs) or canned corn kernels, drained
4-6 fresh green chilies (optional)
½ teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
Juice of 1 lemon
1 inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and grated
1 bunch of fresh cilantro or parsley, finely chopped
3 tablespoons oil, plus oil for frying
2 tablespoons yoghurt (plain)
½ teaspoon baking powder

Directions:

Mix all ingredients, except oil, yoghurt and baking soda in a heatproof bowl.
Heat the 3 tablespoons of oil and when it is very hot pout it over the mixture in the bowl and fold in.
In a separate bowl, combine yoghurt and baking soda. Add to the corn and flour mix to bind the batter.
Heat oil for frying and form batter into little balls about 1/2 tablespoon at a time. Fry a few at a time in hot oil for 1 -2 minutes, (can be deep fried) turning them with a slotted spoon. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
Any vegetable may be substituted for or added to the corn. Chop the vegetables in small pieces. As option, add cheese or tofu to the fritter batter.

SIVANANDA WORLD NEWS - AUGUST 2017

SIVANANDA YOGA VEDANTA Ashrams -

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Camp, Val Morin, Quebec, Canada

Om Namah Sivaya! Greetings from the Sivananda Headquarters

In August the Ashram was alive with energy.  We were able to welcome many families and share in some fun and engaging activities.  Family week is always such a special time here at the Yoga Camp.  We had close to 300 people, many being children, spending quality time together and grow spiritually. Seeing these children in a yogic environment is truly inspiring. Arjuna, Omkari and Kundalini, and their team, created a great program that included a few outings and fun activities.  Alongside the Family Week the Teens Camp was still running where a very special group of teens worked extremely hard, doing such a great job.  They created such a strong bond with each other.  It very nice seeing such young kids growing up in a safe and educational environment where they are able to escape the stresses and anxieties they may have at home. The Teaching Yoga for Kids and Teens course finished in the middle of it all. The TYKT students were very pleased with the program, taught by Saraswati. They had the chance put the teachings into practice since Family Week provided the students. The Camp was also full and busy with two weekend programs. One was a Prenatal Yoga course and the other was Vastu Shastra. Sarada ran the Prenatal course, with nice feedback from the participants.  The students thought it to be very practical and informative compared to other teachings they had received. For the Vastu Shastra Program we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Olga.  She brings with her such nice energy and passion for her teachings, transmitting it into her lessons. The Ashram also started the Ayurveda Massage and Therapy certification course in August, along with the TTC refresher. We had the arrival of Swami Sivadasanandaji and Ananta from Europe, who came to lead the Refresher.  We had an eventful Satsang with the Teen Camp graduation ceremony and Ken Whitely's concert.  Everyone enjoyed of the festivities and entertainment. The teens make an Asana demo to show what they had learned throughout the 2 weeks program. They also prepared a interesting slide show to share what their days were like from their point of view. They were extremely creative and funny. After their graduation ceremony we had the honour to hear Ken Whitely, a great performer, singing beautiful and moving songs.  It was a pleasure having him here with us. Lastly, the staff has been keeping up very well throughout the summer.  Although the summer months were very busy and much work needed to be done, everyone pulled together, making sure the Camp ran smoothly and the guests were happy and well taken care of.

By mid August the Camp was moving along with the day to day duties with everyone enjoying the summer season.  The weather was relatively nice. The Camp was a bit more quiet after the rush of Family Week.  The staff continued with their regular duties and the outdoor projects. There was a joyous evening at the Ashram celebrating Krishna Jayanthi. The night was spent chanting and worshiping Krishna.  We also had some wonderful plays.  Krishna coordinated a beautiful play telling the story of Krishna while Mirabai put together a choir that accompanied the play. Many of Krishna's favourite sweets were made by the staff as the Prasad. Vyasa and his crew worked daily on building the new massage rooms behind the Orange House, progressing very nice.  Some other projects in the works were the Ayurveda Consultation Building and the Storage building next to the Krishna Temple.  Everyone was working very hard and the handwork was showing. In addition, the gardens were kept beautifully throughout the entire summer.  The guests expressed on how beautiful the Camp looked and the enjoyed wonderful scents while walking through the gardens. We are incredibly happy to welcome Hasu Patel, offering her talents and knowledge to our guests.  Hasu gave a wonderful performance, blending just perfectly with the Bhakti Yoga topic of the Satsangs.  The program was positively received and the guests were able to learn and take home some tools to help them with their spiritual practice. Needless to say, there was much activity at the Ashram in August. May the Grace of Master and Swamiji be with all. Om Shanti

Sivananda Dhanwanthari Ashram, Neyyar Dam, Kerala, South India

    Om Namo Narayanaya!

In August the Sadhana Manadalam gained momentum into the second week as students settled into the practice. The monthly Medical Camp happened, with a good turn out. Kalyani and Pamakshi returned to the Ashram. We welcomed new staff, Aditya, from Hyderabad for six months. Krishnapriya returned to Russia after six months service. We wished her well in her higher studies.

A new Yoga Vacation batch started plus the observance of India's Independence Day on the 15th of August. The Sadhana Manadalam group went into their third week, feeling light after completing the Shat Kriyas and purgation. Nataraj started to give them some anatomy and physiology talks related to yoga. We extended condolences to our book-keeper, Manikanadan whose mother died of natural causes. Ajith Shanti came with seven priests to complete the Astrology Pujas for the purification of the Temple and Ashram. There were daily elaborate Pujas for five days. New kumbhs (spires) were fitted to the Devi and Hanuman Temples and Krishna received a new taller base, promising to infuse new energy into the Ashram. Staff performed Guru Pada Puja under the direction of Swami Janardhanananda ji. We thanked Swamiji for his loving presence, teaching and guidance. Pranams to all the Sivananda Family.

Sivananda Ashram Kutir, Netala, Uttarkashi, North India

Om Namo Narayanaya from Uttar Kashi

In August the staff finished the Ashram preparation before students and support staff arrived for the 4th TTC of the season.  37 students were initiated into the course. Some of them had to exert determination to get to the Ashram as the roads were not in good shape due to the excessive rain of the late, resulting in landslides in places.  The TTC teaching staff were Swami Parameswariananda for the main lectures and chanting classes, Vijay from Delhi for the Hatha Yoga classes, Swami Hariomananda for Bhagavad Gita, Dr Sunitha for Anatomy and Physiology.  Assisting staff were Dhanya from Thailand, Bhavana and Lakshmi from Dubai, Hari from Hong Kong and Suren Rao from India. We looked forward to working together and seeing the students grow during the coming weeks.

Mid August started with Maha Mrtyunjaya Homa.  The rain stopped for some days, allowing the normal heat of the summer months to be felt.  The better weather allowed 28 students and some staff to visit Gangotri and the remains of Swamiji's cave after erosion from high waters of the Ganges.  And despite the floor (what remains of the front room) in front of Swamiji's cave being over head height, we were able to climb up.  Having the opportunity to sit in and experience the peace of Swamiji's cave made everyone happy.  The students were introduced to Kriyas and started the teaching groups. All are well. Pranams to all. Om.

Sivananda Ashram Chateau du Yoga, Orleans, France

    Om Namah Sivaya

After the successful end of the TTC and ATTC July the energy in the Ashram was high and positive and immediately the students arrived for the next TTC in August. The arrival day went very well with most of the staffs and karma yogis involved in the reception, boutique and guiding the new TTC's to their rooms. The inauguration ceremony and a powerful Homa with the priests was helping the students to nicely settle in and they soon got accustomed to Ashram life. The vacation-program on how to improve strength and flexibility allowed students to dive deeper into the asanas and Kamala gave her Yoga Psychology course. We were glad to have her here, she was telling nice stories about Swamiji in a Satsang and commented the power show of Swami Vishnudevanandas mission`s pictures in an authentic way, inspiring the listeners to follow the path of yoga and to continue Swamij's mission. A nice group of guests arrived for the 60-years anniversary celebrations. We decorated the Temple with an educational exhibition with photos of the Masters, the project helps to lift the energy in the Temple by bringing us closer to Swamiji's mission in the West. The treasure hunt in the Ashram on the theme of the inspiring and eventful life of Swamiji was enjoyed by all participants and the theatre play about his life, performed at the Temple by the Paris Sivananda theatre team was a big success. A beautiful Bharatanatyam dance- performance with Anusha motivated the students to participate in the dance workshop which followed the next day. The Temple anniversary was celebrated with powerful Pujas and a Homa was held in the honour of Swami Durgananda's birthday. Prema arrived for a further Training for Yoga Teachers about how to practice and correct the major asana cycles. Mid August we welcomed the participants of the Sadhana intensive as well as the staff who arrived to support the course. Angela Hope Murray came for lectures on Ayurveda. Another highlight of the month was Krishna Jayanti, which was celebrated with a beautiful Puja in the Temple with the priest. Towards the end of the month Dr. Rubin Naiman arrived for lectures and a certificate course on The Yoga of Sleep. OM.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm, Grass Valley, California, USA

Om Namah Sivaya from the Yoga Farm

Happy Krishna Janmastame Blessings from the Yoga Farm! In August the Ashram celebrated the birth if Sri Krishna with a beautiful Puja at the Krishna Temple, led by Sw Vasishtananda-ji, with much inspired chanting and the story of Krishna's birth. The celebration continued all the way to midnight. The 10-day Yoga Ayurveda Counselors Course, with Durga Leela and Sw Dharmananda, was excellent. Students are learning how to work with various health conditions (physical, mental, emotional) and to apply Yoga practices and Ayurveda routines to guide people back to an integral state of health. The Stress Relief and Relaxation workshops with Rudra were greatly appreciated by the students, as they learned what stress is and how Yoga practices help to alleviate stress and support healthy lifestyle. We thanked Bhagavati for creating two beautiful vibrant paintings for the Krishna Temple. One of Sri Krishna with flute, and second of Sri Krishna and Radha dancing under the moonlight. The lavender fields, planted in April, grew fast with healthy and happy plants. The llamas and alpacas were peaceful offering a great joy for the guests. The new Krishna cabin construction continued.

Mid month, the Ayurveda Yoga Counselor Course with Durga Leela was completed and immediately the Ashram welcomed many students for the Yoga of Recovery 3-day retreat and 10-day Counselor course. The course focused on Ayurveda, Yoga and 12 step practices, and how to holistically work with those in recovery, developing lifestyle practices and routines from Yoga, Ayurveda and 12 steps combined with philosophical wisdom from these traditions. Ishwari Devi and Parvati led the Beginner Weekend workshops while we welcomed Steven Weiss for the Art of Asana Alignment workshop, sharing techniques for safe asana practice. Swami Vasishtananda performed a beautiful Rudra Puja, taking place during the eclipse, to uplift the mind and invoke Lord Siva's auspicious blessing. Krishna 3 cabin construction resumed in full force. The Ashram is now selling wonderful homemade herbal teas made from the garden herbs, thanks to Sankara and karma yogis. Om Namah Sivaya to all Blessed Selves, from the Yoga Farm.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch, Woodbourne, New York, USA

    Om Namo Narayanaya

Om Namah Sivaya from the Ranch, where by the Grace of the Gurus, TTC Week 1 went well with the inspiration of Swami Hridyananda's presence and program, "Developing Strength through the Yogic Method." The Youth Yoga Retreat, led by Ekajyoti and Gauri Devi, saw the students remarkably engaged, learning about yoga and chanting, as well as having Temple tours, hikes, and crafts. We welcomed Padmavati, who arrived from the Yoga Camp to lead a Meditation Course.  It was wonderful to have Padmavati with us. Other programs were "Yoga & Hiking", with a group hiking to Gertrude's Nose at beautiful Lake Minnewaska. The Youth Retreat delighted us with a talent show. Swami Hridyananda traveled to New York Centre to spend some time and lead the Sunday-evening Satsang. The Youth Retreat had their graduation, and the Meditation Course with Padmavati had their inauguration. Mahadevi (Maria) traveled to Chicago to serve at the Centre through the end of the month, so we said goodbye with gratitude to her and to departing staff Jagadamba, Christina, and Nischala. Another highlight was Krishna Jayanthi. We had an inspiring and uplifting celebration that included meditation, chanting, a play, and Pujas that went through midnight and featured many varieties of Prasad. The TTC course moved into Week 3, which included lectures on Anatomy & Physiology and practice of Kriyas. Early mornings were beautiful so we had a few morning Satsangs on the Barn Platform, with the sun rising over the Catskill Mountains. Shyam and Mohini led a weekend program called "How to Maintain Your Practice Amidst a Busy Life." Staff are well, feeling grateful for the grace of the Gurus, and sending pranams to all. Om.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat, Nassau, Bahamas

    Om Namo Narayanaya, Blessed Selves

August started with an inspiring 4-day program, titled "Living a Divine Life", which was presented by Swami Shambhudevananda during morning and evening Satsangs. We welcomed Fred Luskin, the Director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects, who gave the beautiful program "Yoga and the Art of Forgiveness". We welcomed back Swami Brahmananda and the Ashram priest Krishnan Namboodiri from their travel to Colombia. Swami Brahmananda started his program "The Practice of Karma Yoga". We welcomed Jim Gelcer, a singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, who presented the wonderful program "Building Bhakti: Chanting from the Heart". Parvati Chaitanya taught a 5-day "Essentials of Yoga I Course" and Narayani Chaitanya started a 5-day "Essentials of Meditation Course".

We celebrated Krishna Jayanthi with a beautiful Puja conducted by the priest in the Bala Krishna Temple of the Ashram. Priest then travelled to India to return for the Navaratri celebrations. Beth Spindler, a certified Yoga Therapist and a yoga practitioner since childhood, arrived to the Ashram, presenting the 5-day program "Yoga Therapy: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Medicine" during Satsangs and noon workshops. We welcomed Theodore Tsavoussis, who has earned professional certification in energy medicine and has worked with indigenous shamans and wisdom keepers in the Andes and the Amazon. His program was "Healing the Light Body: Exploring Shamanic Medicine". We welcomed Sandhiya Ramaswamy, an Ayurvedic practitioner, educator and chef with her very informative program "Ayurveda: The Key to Health in Mind, Body, and Spirit". Parvati Chaitanya taught an "Essentials of Positive Thinking" weekend course. Om.

Sivananda Ashram, Retreat House, Reith, Tyrol, Austria

    Om Namah Sivaya

During the Yoga Summer Days, we had asana workshops on the fascinating topic of Myofascial Connections in the Asanas. We also enjoyed hikes in the mountains, especially a beautiful excursion to Labalm, a valley surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery in a conservation area. Krisha Jayanti was celebrated with an all evening programƒ, including an uplifting Puja, different stories on the life of Krishna highlighting his many expressions of divine love and kirtan singing till midnight. The August TTC meanwhile went well. The group was eager to learn and very supportive of one another. Prema came to give a further training for yoga teachers on the Major Asana Cycles. The students appreciated the precise instructions and awareness to detail. We also had the Get Together, Sadhana Days for Yoga Teachers. The 5-day special started with early morning pranayama and workshops on the integral practice of yoga. Daily Pujas in the Ganeshahall uplifted the Ashram energy, in the afternoon we had asana coaching sessions and in the evening the group came together for some especially lively kirtan rehearsals. We also had several further education courses this month. Dr. Anjani and Sanjay Kulkarni inspired us again with a course on Ayurveda and Lifestyle Ailments and lectures at the Satsangs on healthy diet and Ayurvedic lifestyle. Shankara led the Yoga and Music Summer School course with devotional energy. Mantra chanting, practice of kirtan singing and simple steps to playing the harmonium were introduced. Dr. Rubin Naiman came to teach a four-day course on the Yoga of Sleep. He opened-up the sometimes hidden and forgotten world of sleep and dreaming to us by addressing sleep problems as well as focussing on the deeper spiritual aspects of sleep and dreams. We were most grateful for his presence. And finally the scientific perspective was highlighted in a course on How Yoga Works. Chandrika, Cordula Interthal, gave us a broad overview of the scientific evidence on the physical and mental benefits of yoga as a complete system. The course provided us with modern insights into the ancient science of yoga. OM.

Sivananda Ashram Meenakshi Ashram, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India

Om Namo Narayanaya from the Meenakshi Ashram

In August our staff kept up their spiritual practice extremely well especially with their Karma Yoga duties. They had a great time clearing stones and rocks of all sizes from around the area near the Temple to allow for the tilling tractor to aerate the soil before sowing of vegetable seeds. Also many of them tried their hands at pruning of Bougainvillea hedge in front of the reception block. It was worth remarking that though for the first time for some, the trimming came out really good. Anyhow, group Karma Yoga always works wonders. The new batch of Yoga Vacationers started arriving while some from the previous one decided to stay longer. With our Masters blessings, the guests were connecting easily to the positive and energetic vibes of the Ashram, taking in the charm and peacefulness prevailing all around. We received a fair share of rain bringing relief from the raised atmospheric humidity levels. Occasionally we were faced with power supply problems owing to branch cutting work undertaken by the State Electricity Board to prevent damage to their current cables, due to pretty hard wind blowing. The Talent Show was entertaining as the new guests sat in awe of such an idea of talent display, helping one to familiarize others with the innate culture and tradition of one's native land.

We celebrated India's 70th Independence day anniversary on the 15th. After the morning Satsang we had the guests and staffs gather outside for flag hoisting, with the National Anthem being played in the background. This was followed by distribution of sweets to all. We had a makeshift arrangement of a bamboo pole and rope for the ceremony which was later taken down. We had a field visit from the students of Lakshmi  School, but this time it was from their upper primary section. By looking at the kids, we stumbled upon the realization that we have lots to learn from them. As Swami Sivananda ji quotes "Forget like a child any injury done by somebody immediately". Tatiana returned after getting her visa renewed and continued serving at the Ashram. Thanking the Masters for their blessings being showered upon all. With Prem and Om from all Ashramites. Om.

Om Namah Sivaya, from Da Lat Ashram

The Ashram underwent a considerable change or energy as the TTC ended and the start of preparations for the arrival of a large group of students from Taiwan. Several TTC students stayed on at the Ashram, some as temporary staff. The group from Taiwan was led by the director of the affiliated Ashram in Taiwan, Lakshmi, along with her husband Vishnu. Hamsa Chaitanya, director of the Los Angeles Centre, joined us for some days to help with translation. The group of 22 visitors enjoyed a very full schedule. In addition to Satsang, classes and workshops at the Ashram they made a tour of the town, local Temples and waterfalls. We were blessed with fine weather for the duration of their visit. An early morning silent walk up to the mountainside to watch a beautiful sunrise was enjoyed by all. Swami Sitaramananda and Swami Narayanananda left the Ashram for a visit to India. The Ashram then prepared for the arrival of a large group of students from HCM Yoga Centre. Several TTC students came back and stayed at the Ashram, as temporary staff. During this week we have less of residents and yoga vacationers, so the staff focussed on their Sadhana and training through classes and workshops everyday. Om.

It is the last 4 weeks of the summer holidays and summer arrived finally in Berlin at the beginning of the month, so a lot of classes could be held outside on the garden platform. Courses and classes were still running on the regular schedule. Classes were well visited and also Satsang participation was quite good. Krishna Jayanti was celebrated with a peaceful Morning-Puja with staff and some close students and teachers. The energy was soft and joyful. One of the weekends we had a one day seminar on yogic nutrition with a cooking workshop in the morning, a lecture in the afternoon followed by a class and Satsang. The small but inspired group created a wonderful yogic meal and was eager to learn more about healthy vegetarian nutrition. Also this month we had a headstand workshop with many inspired participants, two regular beginners courses and a weekend beginners intensive. The summer retreat in the first week of August was a big success. A good group of students went to the lovely retreat place in a Northern German lake district together with Swami Annapurnananda, who came from Reith to lead the retreat, and with Divya, staff of the Berlin Centre. Participants came mainly from Berlin and Hamburg, some of them with their children and they all spent joyful five days in a yogic surrounding. The weather was good, daily outings on foot or by bike completed the classical yoga vacation schedule. Karma Yoga activity was good this month, the spirit in the Centre was lively, especially during the weekends. Many students came to support the Centre in the garden, baking cookies, boutique, cleaning and packing for TTC Poland. All Staff took turns going to the Retreat House in Austria for 2 weeks to recharge and inspire. OM.

In August we finished our 1st Yoga2 course, with 3 students. They were all excited about their first try of headstand. They all have done the Yoga1, Yoga 2 and Meditation courses. They shared how much they progressed through this theory and practice combined approach, which is very inspiring to all the staff members. We also finished the July meditation course and started our August meditation course back to back. We looked forward to starting the new classical yoga foundation course of 10 classes. We also welcomed Chang from Beijing as our new resident. We had another open house in August. In the morning, the Ayurveda Self Care workshop, taught by Sivani and Omkari (Taiwan) was so well received. The August meditation course continued and we started our new Classical Yoga Foundation course of 10 classes as well. Open classes are well attended. Our new resident Chang did well with all new yoga life. We welcomed Omkari (Taiwan) who came from Vietnam Ashram to support us for upcoming TTC and our previous resident Punyavatii returned as a part time staff member. Om Namah Sivaya to all Blessed Selves from the Chennai Centre.

In August we finished a weekend beginner's batch. On 9th Aug morning, Kalyani Ji reached our Centre from Canada, on her way back to Neyyar Ashram. She conducted a meeting with the Trustee members, teachers and staff regarding the inauguration of our new Ashram at Gudur, Andrah Pradesh - a nice get together.  On 10th, she went to visit Gudur Ashram and came back by evening. Kalyani ji then returned to the Neyyar Dam Ashram. Sandeep ji arrived at the Centre, on his way back from Japan and stayed for one night. One of our old staff, Somakumar, rejoined with us while Sagar left to continue his spiritual studies. We had Satsang, with few of the guests from outside. The weather in Chennai continued to be hot but we saw the occasional rain shower.

Mid August Swami Govindananda ji arrived at our Centre to give a week long meditation course. We went through a lively week, with Swami Govindananda ji's presence.  The course was held during the evenings.  A good number of students attended, inspired and encouraged by his discourses of Meditation.  We celebrated Sree Krishna Jayanthi in our Radhakrishna Hall. We had special Satsang in the morning, chanting 108 Om Namo Narayanaya's. We had a Ganapathy Homa, too, with all participating. Prahladaji's family also arrived from Canada, staying for few days. We started a weekend Beginner's batch, and concluded the Meditation course with a Satsang. The evening was lively with the presence of guests and teachers. Thanks to God and our Masters for everything is being running smoothly. Om.

August saw the final week of a Yoga 1 course. The students were eager to continue with yoga lessons, many signing up for Yoga 2 and planning to start next week.  Mahadevi (Maria Malek), who was at the Ranch for karma yoga this summer, joined the Chicago staff for a few weeks to help out during the website and registration system transition.  Mahadevi will teach workshops while she is here and assist with website and brochure design.  She arrived just in time to help with a surprise birthday party for Radhaji (Gloria McCartney).  Radhaji has been teaching at the Chicago Centre for 40 years and this was one of the first summers she was in Chicago for her birthday.  The party was attended by her many students, other teachers and a few of her local family members.  Radhaji was very surprised and touched by the gesture.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to share community and honour Radhaji 's commitment to the Centre.  By the grace of Master and Swamiji, Radhaji is still teaching 2 morning classes a week, attends the Sunday evening Satsang and attends yoga classes on her days off.

Mid August was busy with the addition of two new hatha yoga workshops, taught by Mahadevi, one on inversion poses and one with a hip and shoulder opening focus. Class and workshop attendance was still strong for this time of year, but Satsang attendance has seen a slight drop as most of the regulars were away on vacation the last 2 weeks of August.  A Friday night kirtan night saw many students attending for the first time.  It was a beautiful evening, with heartfelt chanting leaving us all uplifted and joyful.  There is a steady stream of karma yogis helping with the Centre duties, offering more of their service, building a strong sense of community.  The weather has been perfect, and by the grace of Master and Swamiji, we had a successful photo shoot by the lake early Sunday morning, preparing for the new website. Staff are inspired and regular in Sadhana. Sending pranams to all! Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

We are planning to hold the workshop more often on a regular basis so the staff started to study and prepare to help students in a better way. We began a weekend meditation course with lot of students showing keen interest in meditation this time. The Centre was really busy with all of the space taken by different classes, pre-natal, kids, workshops and even private classes. This week staff cooked modakams with rice and moong dal and reminded us of Ashram Prasad. Apart from that weather was kind. We saw slight rains mid-week and rest of the time loads of sun. The first week of August was a joyful week at the Centre as we were blessed to have many guests with us. PC Kapoor and family came to the end of their week's stay at the Centre, dividing their time between sightseeing and helping in the kitchen, giving classes and a very inspiring Satsang. They continued their onward journey to Orleans mid week. We then prepared the house for our next arrivals, Drs Kulkarni and son, who gave the certificate course 'Ayurveda and Lifestyle Diseases'. The course was a great success, we had many newcomers as well as regular students attending. Students studied the doshas in further detail, how to read their own pulse, and diet advice for ailments such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Students also learned self massage techniques and about the marma points. We had a big group of residential students staying with us too, attending Satsangs, classes and taking delight in the practice of karma yoga. Many students came for private consultations and expressed great gratitude for the knowledge received. As we had such a crowd with us, the evening Satsangs had a very nice mood, culminating in the beautiful Sunday prayers at the end of the week.

Mid month brought the final part of the 'Ayurveda and Lifestyle Diseases' program with the Kulkarnis. The students expressed much gratitude for the teachings and their time spent at the Centre. We held a further two sessions in the coming days, a lecture and a cooking workshop which was a great success, with participants very appreciative of the way the workshop was taught with calmness and care. Particular favourites from the menu were the semolina pancakes and pumpkin subji. After a successful week at the Centre, the doctors departed for Spain for another teaching session.
We held the Summer Open House, which was a great success! We had big numbers of students coming through the doors and joining us all the way up until the Satsang. We taught four classes simultaneously, a gentle/beginners class and an asana workshop both at the nearby park and here at the Centre. Students were very happy with the classes and they loved doing asanas outside, They were greeted after the classes with a variety of different snacks, which they then learnt how to cook in the cooking demonstration. The tea room was full to capacity with students. It was lovely to see the Centre so busy. We also taught an introduction to chanting and meditation. The Satsang was given on the topic of the 'Art of Contentment', the students were very inspired and left gushing with enthusiasm and gratitude for the day. We look forward to welcoming them back soon! OM.

The Weekly Puja, along with daily Peace Mantra Chanting, kept the atmosphere elevated. Satsang attendance also increased. We celebrated Karma Yogi, Christina's birthday with a message from Swami Sivananda and a quaint, homemade cake. Students continued to increase their time at the Centre. Yoga 1 course moves into week two where they had an opportunity to practice adapt, adjust, accommodate to a different time, making space for a weekend Chair Yoga Teacher Training, with Saraswati. All students were very happy. Many Karma Yogis, including one Yoga1 student, lovingly joined in service and were grateful to have a "safe-haven". Hamsa Chaitanya completed translating in the Vietnam Ashram and was now serving in Taiwan. The Centre's website was updated. May we vigilantly continue our effort to receive Guru's Grace. Pranams.

Some other teachers and staff went to Aluenda to support with the TTC and the Yoga Vacation program running simultaneously.

Mid August there was a bank holiday and many Madrilians were away. We had good trial classes and a Yoga 1 started with 12 students. New posters were done for the reception and the last enrolments for Summer School in Aluenda came in. Atma Jyothi went to Aluenda to support the programs the next weeks. OM.

An incredibly month passed by with all the programs running well. We had a visit from Lower Kindergarten students of Lakshmi School, one of the most prominent schools in Madurai city run by the TVS Industrialist Group. The otherwise quiet Ashram became abuzz with the chitter chatter of tiny ones and with their innocent questions about Ashram like are all the inmates here renunciates. They were so surprised to hear a "no" from us. We really appreciate the initiative by the school to instill positive thinking and spirituality in the kids right from their childhood paving the way to mould better citizens of tomorrow. The Yoga Vacationers also were enjoying tremendously in the company of kids with games and other activities. Some of our guests went out for a day trip to Raameshwaram. Thanking our Masters for all blessings and support bestowed. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi!!

In early August many new faces came for the Beginners courses. We also started a course on "The Mind and Its Control. It began with enthusiasm. We helped Amba, a Centre teacher, who needed to pay a very expensive surgery. This situation brought to everyone closer through prayer. The pregnancy class had a photo session for the book. It was a good time for everyone with a little chat and nice pictures. Our Krishna Jayanti Pooja was offered dedicating to Krishna and his birthday. Flowers, sweets and music filled the meditation room. Everyone had the opportunity to postrate to Lord Krishna and offer their prayers through an Archana. We received His blessing. Lalita read about Krishna and also chanting his glories. The maintenance of the Centre was done by karma yogis and staff. The housekeeper was on vacation. The workshops on three levels of relaxation had a small group with a big desire to improve their life using a yogic methods. Parvati, a beginners teacher, led the Satsang. She threw away her fears and started to chant. All in the room enjoyed the flow of the Satsang atmosphere. New visitors came to the Open House. They listened intently and asked about the Five points of Yoga and how to practice the first steps of meditation, reporting they were satisfied with the experience. Karma yogis and staff ran the household duties. Regular and Beginners' classes continued. May all live under the Masters's grace. Om Shanti!!

As we all delve deeper and deeper into selfless service and attainment of immortality, another exceptional month flew by! We started a new Introduction to Meditation course and a Yoga 2 course. A handful of motivated students attended. We were riding big waves these days with all the goodbyes and hellos. We welcomed Ishwari from the Ranch. She gave a very informative and detailed Satsang on Ayurveda. It was inspiring to see her love for sharing her knowledge. We were grateful for her visit! Neeti returned from Canada. We welcomed her with arms wide open as we were happy to have her back! We had to say our goodbyes to Shakti once again! She went to Canada for the TTC Refresher. Speaking of hellos, we said hello to Swami Hridyananda. Evening Satsang was led by Swami Hridyananda and it was just spectacular. She chanted beautifully and gave us a great talk on Bhakti yoga. We feel blessed and still can feel the great vibrations from her powerful chanting! Padmavati graced New York City and won our hearts. She lead the Sunday Satsang with her great sense of humour and won even more hearts! We were grateful for her visit and wished her all the best.

For Krishna Janmashtami and we had a special Puja for baby Krishna! We dressed him up and put him in a swinging cradle followed by offering halva, we heard it was one of his favourites. ;-) We welcomed a new long term staff member, Tandava. He's originally from Brazil, very experienced karma yogi and a harmonium player too! We are excited to have him on staff. Also on Tuesday nights a new Yoga 1 started, as well as our Positive Thinking Course. A special thanks to a karma yogi, Sharada, who does marketing for us. She put the positive thinking course in Time Out Magazine and it was a success! There was good attendance in the open classes. Good vibrations in the air. The staff are doing well. Sending our pranams as always!! Om.

God sent us changing weather. Some days were a little cold but with sunny moments. The sun was shining in the evenings before setting. During the cold days, many students left their pullovers at home and they were freezing in the tent at night for the last classes. During the hot days, the evening classes in the tent became more demanded. By the end of the month everyone enjoyed the last classes in the tent with a bit of nostology. The Centre was happy to welcome the Doctor Kulkarni and his wife for an Ayurvedic  course. Seventeen people attended the five day course. Everyone was inspired by their teachings and their kindness. Their son was also with them.  He gave a beautiful and meditative concert of traditional Indian classical music during an evening Satsang. During the month, we had many visitors passing by on their way to and from the Orleans Ashram. Three yogi buses passed by. Most of the time we had a big family in the house with kind visitors and extra support specially during the weekends. Rukmini from Orleans came for a couple of weeks. She shared with us  her joy and her generosity. She prepared a healthy and exquisite food for everyone. The staff took some holidays  at different times. Sivakami had a fracture of the elbow. Sivakami was feeling much better by the end of the month. She was even able to come for the chanting of some of the Satsangs and to play a little bit of harmonium. On the fifth, Swami Vairagyananda spent the night in Paris on her way to Canada. Swamiji arrived just on time to chant a beautiful kirtan in the evening Satsang. Swami Bhagavatananda who came for few days leaded the Puja for the celebration Krishna Jayanti. This month, We had some new workshops focused on each one of the five points. We had also the usual workshops of stress control, headstand and concentration.  We had some intense courses of yoga 1, yoga2, meditation and positive thinking. The renovations advanced a big steps. The main work is finished. Everything will be ready on time. The architect and the specialist of the roof visited the Centre. They found the cause of many leaks of the building. The works should be done on September or October. We had some water cuts, power cuts and internet was down but not for long time.  We had troubles with the telephone and the credit card machine. The credit card machine was not working for many days, making the reception quite challenging. Lord Ganesha was with us helping to overcome many obstacles. The staff enjoyed the rehearsals for the 60th Anniversary play. By the last week before the presentation we finally had found most of the actors. Sivakami could'nt play because of her broken arm. On Saturday the twelfth, the staff enjoyed playing Swami Vishnu's life for the Celebrations of the 60th years Anniversary in Orleans. The next day, the staff came back from Orleans. That same day in the evening, we had an inspiring Siva Puja led by the priest. The Satsangs are different in the tent. Once, we had  to start with fifteen minutes of Om namo Narayanaya chanting to cover the noise of the neighbours. Some meditations were accompany by the rain, some were in silence and somehow quiet. The Bells of the church nearby were ringing for long time during the Sunday prayers. By the end of the month, the sun, the students and the karma yogis were back. OM.

Altars were placed, the kitchen scrubbed and stocked, dorms and rooms prepared, and the boutique has organized with the help of arriving TTC students who took quickly to the spirit of karma yoga. Twenty-students were initiated into the course, mainly all Italian. The first week of the course went very smoothly with students and staff quickly settling into the routine. Swami Rajeshwarnanda taught the main lecture and the Hatha Yoga with the assistance of Lalitambika. Swami Sankarnananda taught the chanting and oversaw the kitchen, preparing very sattvic and well received meals. Sandeep, from India, offered a 120-minute asana class with 26 people attending. It was a full house despite occurring on a weekday. After the class, a briefing session on TTC was given by Narayani Noriko, with 11 people joining. Sandeep and Noriko had been visiting 12 locations throughout Japan offering the similar programs. A three-day workshop on Vedanta by Swami Chetanananda from Kyoto was held on a weekend (a Japanese national holiday), joined by nearly 50 people. Most of them attended for 3 days in a row. We hope his workshops provide an opportunity to introduce Vedanta philosophy to our regular class students.
The middle of the month had a lot of rain with cool temperatures for August. A new Yoga 1 course started with 6 enrollments, and a new Yoga 2 course starting with 4 people on Saturdays. A trial class given by Kumari Noriko was held on Sundays, joined by 8 people, and 3 of them signed up for Yoga 1 course. Vishnu, a former staff, stayed at the Centre and offered his service. The Satsang on Sunday evenings were infused with energy by his powerful voice and drum. Many of our long time students were rejoiced to see him again. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

In early August a group of Toronto teachers used opportunity to go to the Ashram for the Civic Holiday long weekend. Meanwhile, we had around 25 students for Satsang. Ramapriya taught a Japanese cooking workshop that was very well attended .

Later in the month a Yoga 2 course started. Mayavan taught Introduction to Yoga and Ayurveda workshop on Saturdays. We had lots of karma yogis who helped us paint our asana halls. We were grateful for all their time. Atmaswaroop arrived from the Ashram to help as staff at the Centre. Pranams to all.

    Om Namah Sivaya!

In August we started a new batch on Monday evenings. All other classes went well. Karma yogi Unnikrishnan took a break from the Centre for a few weeks. Lalithasahasranama Poojas were conducted on Fridays. Students were introduced to the practices of Jala Neti and Sutra Neti in a Kriya Workshop. Nataraj ji taught an asana correction workshop. It helped the students to improve their postures. After the class he conducted staff meeting and gave us valuable suggestions to improve the working condition of the Centre. Satsang was led by Yashpal ji. A Ladies Beginners' batch started on Mondays. All other classes went well. We conducted Ganapathy Homa on the 1st day of the Malayalam month, "Chingam". The special summer courses "For More Flexibility" were helping to keep the prana up in this hot summer season of August. This month we started a new Cooking Workshop on Wednesdays before lunch time and after the yoga class, to inspire the students to try out some new summer recipes. The Sun salutation Workshop brought joy and gave the students a boost for their daily practice. The Prasad Workshop on Saturday was very successful and we could successfully convey the idea that preparing the Prasad is very special and leads one to the awakening of Bhakti. We also had a nice TTC Preparation Day with very inspired students. Overall, classes and courses were running smoothly in August, although attendance was a little lower because of high temperatures. Highlight of the month was, of course, the celebration of Krishna Janmasthami. The Centre was filled with uplifting Krishna energy. We served Krishna and his devotees with 2 Prasads and everybody was inspired to take some rose petals for their altar at home after the Archanam. The altar was shining with all these nice flowers. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania

    Om Namah Sivaya, from Vilnius

After the return from the very successful TTC in Lithuania much energy was put into washing, cleaning and storing the equipment. Our sincere karma yogi Surya stayed in the Centre for the whole week and joyfully helped with all the work. Fresh energy, enthusiasm and inspiration for teaching yoga and serving people flocked to the yoga Centre with the newly graduated yoga teachers. Few of them have started assisting in the classes immediately after the TTC. By the end of the month Ananda, Savitri, Lakshmi, Vani Devi started to teach classes on themselves successfully.
This is a great help for the Centre during the August, because many teachers were still on holidays. We decided to use this not very active time for some renovation of the Centre and with the help of karma yogis to repaint the walls of the reception, entrance and corridor and to clean deeper the various parts of the house. The new Centre brochure was planned, made and printed. Lots of prana came to the Centre with the brochure, new posters and leaflets and renewing the webpage. In the beginning of August Swami Vairagyananda left for Canada to support TTC Refresher program and gain inspiration for Sadhana as well. Satsangs were well attended and every time we saw from 2 to 4 newcomers and we always had Russian speakers, so our new teacher Ananda was happy to serve as translator. Our new teachers and students has a strong spirit of karma yoga, so we started to give them more responsibilities and this created a very good atmosphere in the Centre. We had beautiful Puja for Lord Krishna on Monday, 14th with 15 sincere teachers and students. Everyone enjoyed light and joyful, full of Love energy, chanting and very special Prasad made by Mother Parvati. Nice Ganesha Chaturthi Puja on Friday morning filled the Centre with a very nice energy and helped a lot to carry on and do all the necessary work to prepare the Centre to function without the staff, because Durgadevi leaves to Poland TTC. Our teachers will have the very good opportunity to take the responsibility, to grow and to prove how much Vilnius Centre is needed for the students and teachers. OM.
