Twenty years ago, Swami Vishnudevananda attained Mahasamadhi, after building up a successful worldwide yoga organisation. He accomplished the mission imparted to him by his Master, Swami Sivananda: "to bring the teachings of Yoga and Vedanta to the West – people are waiting." Yoga is now a mainstream practice around the world. Not all yoga practitioners, however, are aware of the scope of this yogic knowledge – how it is a way of life, more than just a physical practice. Today, more importantly than ever, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres continues the educational work of bring- ing these yogic teachings to those in search of well-being and meaning in their life. Yoga is an integral system of self development aiming to bring about a life of both inner and outer peace. This ancient message of the Upanishads was brought back to its full glory by the great vedantin, Shankaracharya (8th Century AD), and carried through to modern times by an uninterrupted lineage of sages. Each one gave this vedic knowledge a fresh perspective and a new vigour, which is what the world needs today more than ever. Swami Sivananda played an important role in the propagation of yogic knowledge in the 20th Century and was very instrumental in opening up yoga to the entire world. We have just celebrated his 50th Mahasamadhi anniversary on July 14, 1963.

The Sivananda Organization would like to announce that Swami Mahadevananda, one of the most senior disciples of Swami Vishnudevananda and member of the executive board, has decided to withdraw from his responsibilities as a member of the Executive Board, as well as from all other administrative and teaching responsibilities in the Sivananda organization, in order to move on to a contemplative life in seclusion in india. The executive board would like to express its great appreciation for Swami Mahadevanandaji's devoted and inspiring service of Master and Swamiji's mission over more than 40 years.

We welcome a new member on the executive board, Swami Sadasivananda, who is currently the director of the New York Centre.

Q. What is music? Has it got any power to soothe?

Music is a system of harmonious, melodious and rhythmic sounds capable of producing inner peace and an inexpressible thrill of joy. Music is one of the sciences which deal with Nada (Sabda) which is the first vibration of Brahman represented by the Pranava  Om. All the Sapta Svaras-- Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni-- which evolved themselves later into the various vocal sounds first originated out of this fundamental Om, symbolic of Brahman. Music is one of the fine arts or Lalita Kalas. Yes. It has got not only the power to soothe the aching mind, but also the power to cure diseases like neurasthenia, insomnia, hysteria, moroseness, giddiness, etc. To achieve perfection in the Sangita Sastra is to attune oneself with Brahman. As Brahman is Light Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute and so on, so is He Nada Absolute. God is Nada Brahman. One can achieve God, even as the votaries of music, Thyagaraja, Purandhara Das, Tukaram and others, did.

Q. I understand the Atman is different from the body and is not affected by the latter's doings. The body is reborn a number of times according to its Karma and goes through life and death as per the Supreme Will. If this is so, then who goes to hell or heaven?

The real experiencer of anything, in an individualistic way, is neither the Self nor the physical body. It is the mind that is the Centre of individuality, that individualizes and imprisons a ray of the Atman in what is called the individual soul. And it is this mind, as embodied in the subtle body, that undergoes the pleasure of heaven or the pains of hell, or for that matter, any experience through a gross or a subtle body.The mind appears to have consciousness on account of there being a ray of the Atman in it, in the form of a reflection, very much limited by its own constitution. Hence it will be clear that the individuality of a person is as much real or unreal as a reflection of a real object. Though everything happens according to the Supreme Will, the Karma of the individual determines the form or shape of the experience that is to be had under the dispensation of this Will. It is not the Atman or the body that has any type of relative experience, though the body is a gross means of experience; it is the mind that has all this.

Q. What is this earth?
A. Different definitions can be given from different standpoints. The earth is one of the fields for experiencing the fruits of good, bad and mixed actions, and for performing fresh actions. It is a Bhoga-bhumi as well as a Karma-bhumi. It is a bundle of atoms, a form of energy, a materialization of thought, an expression of the effects of the Karmas of the individuals of whom it is composed and to whom it is related. Scientifically, the earth is only one of the planets which go to make the Universe.

MATSYASANA - The Fish Pose -
All Levels

The counter pose to the end of the shoulderstand cycle. After practicing fish, there is a deeper relaxation possible in corpse pose. Spend half the time in fish you spent in the shoulderstand or sarvangasana. Called matsyasana as helps one float easily on the water (Master Sivananda)

Caution: The neck is hyper extended during the asana and should not be practiced if this causes discomfort or dizziness or practice for only a few breaths.

In this pose, the legs should be kept together throughout and feet relaxed but not apart. The knees are straight. Placing the arms under the body while lying on the back, place the palms face down on the mat and as close to your thighs as possible. Keep the hands together. The tip is to keep the elbows close to each as possible so that on raising the upper body onto the bent elbows, the elbows give good support to the body. Raise the upper body and head on an inhalation, looking towards the feet. Once the chest is lifted as high as possible, and the weight is on the elbows, then the neck can be slowly extended and head held back in a relaxed way without tension in the neck. Breathe deeply using full yogic breath. The top of the head is lowered to the mat in the full pose but the weight is not on the head. It is on the elbows while the buttocks and thighs always remain on the mat. Use full yogic breaths in this open chest position. Hold for half the time as in sarvangasana. Tip- keep the mouth closed for good stretch in the neck. Come out of the pose by raising the body on the elbows, lift up the head to look at the feet and then lower the upper body and head slowly to the mat.
Relax deeply in corpse pose.

For a deep thigh stretch in an intermediate practice, a cross legged version of the fish can be practiced. While on the back, cross the legs and catch hold of the feet and lower the knees to the mat by extending the thighs. When coming onto the elbows on inhalation, the hips are moved up and forward so knees are close to the floor as possible. Then the chest is lifted on another inhalation and the neck extended back with top of head on the mat. Again the weight is on the elbows. No weight of the body is on the feet. Hold for up to a minute. Inhale and push the chest higher and extend the neck. On an exhalation, the back is lowered to the mat and legs are uncrossed. Next time this is practiced cross the legs the opposite way. Relax deeply in corpse pose.

Bends the spine in the opposite direction to shoulderstand.
Relieves stiffness in neck and cervical region and the shoulders, bringing good blood supply to these regions.
Tones nerves of neck and back.
Corrects the tendency to round the shoulders.
The rib cage is expanded, improving lung capacity.
Helps asthma and lung congestion.
Strengthens arm muscles.
Helps improve parathyroid gland functioning which regulates calcium levels in the blood and calcium absorption in the body. Stimulates pineal and pituitary glands.
Recharges the solar plexus area.
Helps regulate mood.

- bhoga - enjoyment, of the senses; bhumi - plane of existence, stage

Bhoga Bhumi is the plane of existence when the experiencer lives in the enjoyment that the senses manifest. The force of Will can assist in those action of enjoyments.

The Heavenly Plane is only a Bhoga Bhumi.  So is the Hell plane.  The Heavenly Plane and Hell plane are just planes of enjoyment. They are planes where man is rewarded or punished for actions done on earth. - Sw. Sivananda

The same experiencer can release from the sensory experience of Bhoga Bhumi while on Earth and dedicate Life to good deeds, thoughts and words to connect with the greater Self. This is then living on Earth in the Karma Bhumi - the plane of existence of rightful actions.

Lasting happiness can be found only in God and God can be reached only from the Earth plane.  Earth is the only Karma Bhumi where man can do Sadhana, where man can do Tapasya that will take him to God and eternal bliss. He cannot do Sadhana in the Heavenly plane. He can only enjoy in the Heavenly plane for meritorious deeds already performed on earth. - Sw. Sivananda

Chapter XVIII: The Yoga of Liberation by Renunciation

The unwavering firmness by which, through Yoga, the functions of the mind, the life-force and the senses are restrained-that firmness, O Arjuna, is Sattwic!


But that firmness, O Arjuna, by which, on account of attachment and desire for reward, one holds fast to Dharma, enjoyment of pleasures and earning of wealth-that firmness, O Arjuna, is Rajasic!


That by which a stupid man does not abandon sleep, fear, grief, despair and also conceit-that firmness, O Arjuna, is Tamasic! Bound by a hundred ties of hope, given over to lust and anger, they strive to obtain by unlawful means hoards of wealth for sensual enjoyment.

Always adapt yourself to all surroundings and environments. You will forever enjoy peace and strength. - Sri Swami Sivananda


Raja Yoga, the royal path of mind control, is the most comprehensive and scientific approach to God-Realization. WALNUT COLESLAW - For the nut lover, a deliciously healthy and very flavoursome alternative to store bought coleslaw. A great way to include a raw vegetable as a source of prana and include nuts and herbs. Serves 4.

2 oz. or 50 grams shelled walnuts, chopped
2 tablespoons pine nuts
1 tablespoons sunflower seeds
¼ large red cabbage finely shredded or substitute quarter green cabbage, shredded
1 large carrot, peeled and grated (optional)
2 oz or 50 grams golden raisins (optional)
4 tbsp plain natural yoghurt
Juice of half a lime
3 tbsp walnut oil (or select an optional vegetable oil)
2 teaspoons maple syrup (or honey)
¼ tsp salt
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
3 tbsp fresh mint, cilantro or basil, chopped, plus a few whole leaves to garnish


Put walnuts, pine nuts, sesame and sunflower seeds in a pan and dry fry them over a medium heat, shaking frequently, for about 1 minute, or until lightly toasted and fragrant.
Place the shredded cabbage, carrot, golden raisins, toasted walnuts, pine nuts, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds into a large bowl and mix well.
For the dressing, mix the natural yogurt, lime juice, walnut oil, maple syrup, salt and pepper and whisk to combine. Pour the dressing over the cabbage, add the herbs and combine well.
Scatter with the whole mint, cilantro or basil leaves before serving.

    Om Namah Sivaya! Greetings from the Headquarters.
    During August we experienced the second week of ATTC where the students are slowly being introduced to the minor pranayamas. They coped very well with their practice, and are focused completely on the course. Krishna started teaching a Level 2 for Thai Yoga Massage course. All the staff are happy, as the students need bodies to practice on! Dr. Sonal Bhatt completed the Ayurveda Wellness course, followed by the Ayurvedic Nutritional Cooking course. Lama Tenzin, a Buddhist monk with a great depth of knowledge in philosophy and life, gave a few workshops and lectures during Satsang on truth, love, and compassion. Siva a long time devotee of the temple, sponsored a 16 step Puja for Ayappa. Guests were taken there by staff and had the chance to experience parts of the Puja, after which they attended a drumming workshop with Alain Beaulieu.  We celebrated Swami Shivabhaktananda's birthday. As there were many staff from South America, they cooked a delicious feast of traditional Brasilian food. Joanne made Brigadeiro, a very traditional sweet served at birthdays and parties. It was nice for all the staff to be together, enjoying the delicious food and company. We did landscaping work around the dormitories and behind the kitchen. We had many karma yogi's, so we painted all the new buildings! The gardens looked beautiful and well maintained by our strong garden team. We had over 50 guests staying with us early August, with a lot of movement in and out every day. Surya, Tejas and Keshava are very busy running the guest programme. The staff are working hard and happy! Staff at the Ashram continued to do well, working hard with the TTC and Guest Programs. We look forward to serving the guests and students, as always. Salutations to the worldwide family from the Sivananda Headquarters.

    During August Yoga Vacation programme continued well with consistently good numbers. Highlights included monthly Ailyam Puja (for Swamiji's birthstar) and Lalitasahasranama Puja with archana, with all the guests at the Raja Rajeshwari temple. Some guests also enjoyed a day trip to Kanyakumari one Friday. Staff kept up their sadhana schedule despite the busy guest schedule. New yoga vacation batch started. After the initial Ashram tour and orientation, they had a lecture on Hindu gods and prayers by guest speaker Colonel Nair and an introduction to Ayurveda by Dr Vishnu. Rohini began conducting the 2pm Yoga Vacation lectures for the first time. She was nervous but open to the challenge. Ashram staff and guests jumped into action to help Shanti, resident dog after she suffered a deep cut on her paw. Yully is did a daily cleaning and dressing of the wound and Shanti showed signs of quick recovery. All staff are in good spirits and send their pranams.

    The 2nd week of the August TTC coincided with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Ashram. This was definitely the highlight of the year and probably of all we have experienced at the Ashram in the last 10 years. It was a full week of celebration culminating in the birthday of Swami Durgananda on August 11th. It started with a memorable Puja to Lord Hanuman. The weather was very stormy that morning, so we spent several hours building a temporary tent over the shrine and lawn around for people to sit. When it was finally all in place, it stopped raining! Everyone enjoyed the group effort and this gave extra prana to the ceremony. All attending did abhishekam to Lord Hanuman, who looked very sweet with beautiful decoration and a very special garland. On the next day, we celebrated the Temple anniversary with a 6 hour Puja to all deities : Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna, the Divine Mother, Siva and the Navagrahas.  The temple had been fully decorated for days by a dedicated team of karma yogis climbing on ladders to reach the very high ceiling and looked very festive. All the Gods looked shiny in their new clothes and lush decoration. Every evening of the week was dedicated to bhakti with words of wisdom from the scriptures and divine kirtan with live music, filling the Ashram with much sweetness and longing for God. Swami Durgananda gave a very wonderful lecture on Swamiji, full of great stories, high prana and humour. Swami Sivadasananda gave a powerful yoga class with over 100 students on the asana platform. Much preparation was put for the last event of the week, the birthday of Swami Durgananda. It started on a very powerful note with a long Homa, with the 12 swamis present making offering in the fire. Then the priest did a beautiful padaPuja to Swamiji and offered a big flower mala to her. Then came a huge cake, lovingly prepared by Swami Bhagavatananda. Presents were given with live musical accompaniment. The whole ceremony was full of joy, lightness and a very strong presence of the Masters. This was followed by a great feast with the presence of all the Acharyas, swamis, staff, TTC students and guests. The dining space was beautifully decorated by Swami Ramapriyananda, the food was delicious and plentiful, and all were fully happy at the end. After a little rest and more preparation, the next event was a grand programme with famous Indian Bharata Natyam dancer Raghunath Manet, who enchanted all with his amazing energy and devotion to Lord Siva. He also played the vina very beautifully. The day finished with more Bhakti and music, ending late in the night, but no one seemed to bother about time which was somehow transcended on this day ! Students even happily ended the day in the kitchen to finsh the dishes we had no time to do before. We thank the Acharyas, swamis and staff for this unforgettable event. The Ashram is now radiating a very peaceful and loving energy. OM.

    During August the Meditation and Self Study course completed with students knowing a little more about the workings of their minds. The Yoga of Recovery Course for Counsellors, with Swami Sitaramananda and Durga Leela, was a wonderful success, inspiring the students as they gained self help knowledge in dealing or counselling on addiction, using a combination of tools and principles from Yoga psychology, Ayurveda and 12 steps. The group also learned how to give workshops and share this very special teaching with their community. Taught by Saraswati and Kailas Chaitanya, the Beginner Yoga Intensive with accent on Gentle Yoga, gathered a full house of first time guests new to the Ashram and Yoga. Meanwhile Katyayani and staff conducted a Family Weekend, with many parents and children enjoying the warm summer days, the animals, and the pond. Many guests enjoyed the Well Being Centre, receiving Ayurveda and Marma Point Therapies. We sent our blessings to young staff Jayanta who has finished his commitment at the Yoga Farm and will soon be serving in the Sivananda Centre in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. We are all feeling the grace of the Gurus. Om Namo Narayanaya to all the Sivananda family.

    During August the ATTC students departed from the Ashram, after one month of highly inspiring and energy elevating sadhana. Swami Ambikananda returned to the Ashram from the New York Centre, where she help hold the space for the month of ATTC while Swami Sadasivananda was here teaching Vedanta.  Padmavati has joined the New York Centre staff, where she will help support Swami Sadasivananda in running the Centre.  The Youth Camp was underway, with a sweet group of boys and girls, mostly between the ages of 11 and 13.  Omkari kept them busy with various activities, including morning meditations walks and a daily asana practice before breakfast. Charles and Julia Yelton arrived for the 2 week Permaculture course. There are eight participants this year.  We were excited to see what new plans they will come up with for the sustainability of the Ashram. The Yeltons gave a Permaculture presentation at a Saturday evening Satsang, to a full house of guests here for the weekend. A meditation intensive started that will run for five days.  Swami Ambikananda will be leading the workshops and helping those new to meditation cultivate a regular practice.  The September TTC applications continued to pour in and we have started the preparations for their arrival. The Permaculture Design Course jumped right into the 16 day program getting their hands dirty by testing soil, digging swales, identifying medicinal and wild edible plants on the Ashram and working on their first design project.  It is a dynamic and fast paced course, with Charles and Julia Yelton enthusiastically sharing all that they know about permaculture and sustainability.  Family Week was next, with parents and children arriving for the week long program.  This year we had ten families participating and over 20 youngsters.  It was moving and inspiring watching the little ones doing sun salutations on the barn platform.  Omkari did a great job keeping them engaged in the activities.  The Ashram was full of laughter and joy at the moment, with families, staff and guest all contributing to the warm and friendly atmosphere. The energy on the Ashram was positive and full of gratitude for the the blessings bestowed upon us all by the Grace of Master and Swamiji. The staff send Pranams to all!     During August Shankara Chaitanya arrived from Israel to spend the month of August. We were happy to have him with us. We enjoyed his teachings and his presence in the Ashram. We had a program on the Lives of Saints discussing the lives of many saints, including Swami Sivananda, Swami Rama Thirta and St. Therese de Lisieux. There were many renovations taking place throughout the Ashram this summer. We rebuilt many of the concrete pathways and fixed the roof on the main building. Om Namah Sivaya. Pranams to all!

    The temperatures have been somewhat tempered, but it nevertheless continues to be a beautiful summer. The vacation guests thourougly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and programmes on offer. The TTC students are thriving well and finished their first week in good spirits. After 9 intense teaching days the Yoga of the Heart Course drew to a close on Friday with the graduation of 32 very enthusiastic participants. We hope to welcome Nishala and Bhaskara back again next year. Stephen Quong gave 3 lectures at Satsang, the giving us glimpses of the vast topic of vedic astrology. Swami Sivadasananda and Swami Ramapriyananda left for Orleans for the 10th anniversary celebrations and of course Swami Durgananda's 70th birthday. At the weekend we were happy to welcome Chandrika,  a medical doctor and temporary staff from the Munich Centre, who gave a series of well received lectures on 'How Yoga Works'. She presented scientific studies that gave a good insight into the health promoting effects of the yoga practice on the mayor body functions. At the end of this busy week we look back with much gratitude for all the support we received and are looking forward to the Bhagavad Saptaha celebration. OM.

    During August the Yoga Vacation course kept showing a considerably high number of participants, something not very common for this moment of the year. Almost every day we had a little bit of a rush is the reception with unexpected new arrivals who still come to join the course even for just the 3 mandatory days. We've been lucky enough to get a few refreshing showers these days as well. The temperature has dropped considerably! We welcomed Anoop ji who came back fully recharged from Canada after spending about 1.5 months at the Yoga Camp. After his arrival, all the staff gathered everyday to cover different areas of the Ashram that need to be cleaned and prepared for the oncoming high season, such as store rooms, gardens, other outside areas and so on. Following Anoopji's arrival Swami Satchidananda had to make his way up to Rishikesh to help out with the Gita classes in the current TTC there. We expect him to come back as soon as the course finishes. Full of faith and devotion in our Satguru's will and protection, we keep it up! The Yoga Vacation course kept on happening with natural flow. The contagious spirit of karma yoga gathered all the staff in intensive and uplifting team work with the current focus on the gardens around the dining hall and kitchen. We tilled the earth, removing weeds and moving stones to make fences around these plots. The Ashram looked pretty different… cleaner, prettier and fresher also due to the spontaneous rain that poured over our heads during the last 2 weeks!  Once in a while the guests were involved in this initiative, showing great acceptance and cooperation. Nailing, the massage therapist, left to Kerala for a few days to visit the Ashram in Neyyar Dam. All the staff send their pranams and hope all are well and contented.     During August the Yoga 1 that Krishna was teaching finished. We had 4 students in the Trial class that Krishna taught. The Advanced class was appreciated by some regular students. We had some repairing in the Centre because of water leaking due to the heavy rain. We also fixed the Lotus pool's pump. The gardening continued every weekend as usual. One Friday night, the staff shared a nice moment watching a Thai movie  without translation and yet enjoyed it. Prajna taught Yoga 1 in Thai, Siham taught the other class and Krishna taught the weekend intensive Y1. The Advanced Open class was successfully offered for the last 3 weeks. Krishna taught a Headstand workshop for the teachers who will assist Maniji next week in the Bangkok Yoga Anniversary event. One Sunday evening, Krishna led a beautiful and joyful Satsang. We welcomed back Maniji who returned from Delhi.

    During August school started in Berlin and people are keen to start with Yoga. We had a good trial class this week and a successful open day on Sunday. A good group of newcomers participated, most of them stayed for the full program – cooking workshop, Asana demonstration, Trial class and introduction to meditation. Some stayed also for Satsang. A big Yoga 1 course on Tuesday as well as some higher courses started. Swami Mangalananda stayed this week in Berlin to support the Centre. OM.

    During August it was service-as-usual here at the Chennai Centre. We welcomed of a new batch of eager students to our early-morning Monday beginner course. One Saturday, a few students felt the pleasure of balancing/willing their way into a headstand, for the first time, at our Headstand Workshop. Aside from that, students continued to walk out of classes smiling everyday, which is always a good thing. :) With the rainy season now upon us, the weather looked to be cooling down here in Chennai. Looking forward to heating things up (at least in the Centre!) as more beginner courses and workshops were scheduled into the coming weeks! We all remain in good health and send pranams.     During August a new Sunday-morning Yoga 1 course started, and from Monday through Friday we offered an early-morning intensive, with students coming at 6am to practice pranayama, asanas, and meditation. Swami Narayanananda taught the intensive, and the group was appreciative and steady in their attendance. One Saturday evening, students and teachers joined us in the garden for a potluck and barbecue, celebrating our teacher Radha's birthday, as well as the garden's beauty and each others' company. Classes and courses continued to go well, by the grace of the Gurus. After a period of unseasonably cool weather, Chicago's temperature and humidity was on the rise once again.     August started off with 2 beginner's batches in the morning and evening. The 15-day weight loss workshop started on Mondays, receiving a good turnout. The meditation course started on Wednesdays. The gentle yoga, kid's yoga and pre-natal yoga went on smoothly. With the grace of Gurudev the Centre is filled with fresh positive energy.     During August we started a new Beginners course on Monday mornings, with many students and Manju Sharma teaching. The mid-day chanting went well with all staff involved. We welcomed Swami Satchidanandaji from Madurai Ashram on his way to TTC in Rishikesh. Savitri came back after her travels and all are happy to have her energy and assistance in teaching and reception.     During August the Centre had a big change in staff members. Ganga led a group of 4 teachers to the Yoga Farm in California, USA, for a short visit and training. Shanti left after 3 months of wonderful service at Centre. The Centre welcomed 2 new staff, Padma and Mangala, to help out while the other teachers were away. We started a new Yoga 1 Beginner course with a good number of student attending. Padma taught the Headstand workshop. Students enjoyed it very much and were happy to understand more about the benefits and the steps to do headstand safely and effectively. We were happy to be blessed by the Divine Mother, Master and Guru. All the staff were happy, with the Guru's blessings. Pranams to all the Sivananda family. Om Tat Sat.

    During August the various special programmes this summer kept the Centre and its staff active. The advanced asana programme with Prema came to a conclusion and was enthusiastically received. We focussed this week on promoting the upcoming Ayurveda programme, the summer retreat in the countryside of Dorset and the TTC starting at the end of the month. There was a Yoga 2 and a Yoga 4 intensive weekend, it felt like a mini-retreat in the city with several people living outside of London using the opportunity to stay in the Centre for the whole weekend. We welcomed this week mr and mrs Kulkarni from India for a 6-day programme on Healthy Cooking with Ayurveda. The programme consisted of 4 lectures and two cooking workshops. The programme was very enthusiastically received and many people took the opportunity to get personal advice about their health and diet in private consultations. Preparations for the upcoming summer retreat and the TTC are in full swing and are keeping us busy amongst the regular Centre activities. Om.

    During August it was quiet, with many teachers and students out of town. One Friday night and Saturday afternoon we had inspiring sessions about non-violent spiritual action from visiting presenter, Michael Nagler, who has dedicated his life to teaching non-violent principles based on Gandhian and spiritual teachings. 'Nonviolence makes you a better person - violence never does'. We prepared for a large outdoor Ganesha homa, with Vedic priest Samavedula, for our annual Vedic ritual. We had 60 people attend. He performed Ganesha and Lakshmi Pujas and a Ganesha home in the parking lot behind the Yoga Centre. The energy was very high during the 3 hour ritual and not only the Yoga Centre but also the local neighbourhood benefited from the purification. The priest skilfully included everyone in the offerings and everyone was very inspired. Yoga class attendance was reduced because many students and teachers away on vacation.     August was a busy Spanish TTC final preparation and packing week at the Madrid Centre. Our last boutique and book orders arrived on time as well. A new, very well attended, Y1 course started this week. A new resident, Sivaraj,  joined as a workstudy at the Centre on Thursday. Swami Atmaramananda returned to the Centre from the Orleans 10 years anniversary celebration. Radha Chaitanya from Buenos Aires arrived to teach in the Spanish TTC in Aluenda. Om Wednesday morning, Swami Atmaramananda, Radha Chaitanya, Lakshmi, Jyoti and close karma yogis left for Aluenda to prepare the site of the TTC Spain 2013. Karuna is keeping care of the Centre with close teachers . Throughout the week, an increasing number of students were coming to the Centre to sign up for the fall beginner courses and to inquire about special workshops and other courses. OM.

    TTC Spain: On Wednesday we drove a truck full of ttc material to the ttc place in Aluenda, a lovely small typical village  about 2 hours drive from Madrid . The meditation room, boutique and office were setup and the next day we welcomed the 40 ttc students of the course. The Inauguration introduced the course to a very serious group of students mainly from Spain but also Portugal, Scotland, Holland, France and Peru.

    During August we started two morning common and ladies beginner batch. There was a small fall down in the attendance due to Ramjan, and our Muslim students were not able to come for one month. We will get back them from this month end. Prenatal classes continued fine, with aArati. All the open classes, courses, and Kids class going well and fine with the grace of Gurus.     During August a Beginners Y1 course started on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Both courses had a lot of students. Kanti and Chandra travelled to Canada to celebrate Kanti's birthday. The staff of South America performed a greeting card and we sent it to her by e-mail. The Centre has been very crowded with regular classes, pregnant and children's classes despite the cold and rainy days. Om.

    During August we had a couple of asana workshops on the topic "Strength and Flexibility in the Asana" with Prema. The workshops had good attendance. Students responded very positively and were eager to learn a lot of helpful details for their asana practice. The Ashram season in the summer brought us a lot of fresh Ashram prana to the Centre: Amba returned very inspired from the ten-year anniversary celebrations in Orleans and Sivani and Chandrika returned from their stays in the Sivananda Yoga Retreat House in Reith in the Tyrolean Alps.     During August all is well in the New York Centre with courses and classes filling up on our summer schedule. We welcomed back Swami Sadasivananda from the Ranch, along with Padmavati and Bharata who are now staff here at the Centre. Swami Ambikananda returned back to the Ranch. We said goodbye to Mukti Devi. We thank her for her dedicated service over the last few months and wish her well in her new life.  We focused on our new plans for promoting our autumn schedule, including leaflet and poster runs, and increased exposure on the social media sites. Swami Sadasivananda left for a two-week stay in Canada. Mahadev Chaitanya dropped in for a quick visit one weekend. Sri Devi provided us with delicious meals, making us realise how important it is to eat properly. We started a new Meditation Course and a new Positive Thinking Course, both with good attendance. We continued to work on ways to promote the Centre and the upcoming fall program. Om Namah Sivaya from all the staff here at the NYC Centre. May the Gurus' blessings of be with us all.

    The summer finally arrived in August. The last two weeks have been extremely hot but always with a pleasant breeze or with the refreshing rain. The fans were cleaned and set in the asana halls, some plants went out to enjoy the fresh air and more of the students prefer to come to the evening classes when the sun is down. By the end of the month the number of students went down, because of the high temperatures and the holidays.  The Centre was blessed with two inspiring Satsangs given by Swami Kailasananda and some of her flash visits. Swamiji's words and presence gave joy and inspiration to everyone. We have also Swami Atmaramananda kindles and loving presence passing by in his way to the Ashram. At the beginning of the month we had an anger workshop with a small group of motivated and grateful people. This month we strengthen the connection with the masters with the celebration of the peace day, the Maha Samadhi of Swami Sivananda and Gurupurnima. The Masters send good support to help with the running of the Centre, the family grows: Swami Vairagyananda arrived to stay in the Centre until the end of August. The Centre felt cheerful with swamiji's lively way of being and with her beautiful singing. Sundari who did her TTC in Rudraprayag also arrived to stay as a work-study for three months. Some karma yogis are in the Centre for a couple of weeks and some others confirmed that they would come in August. OM.

    During August all was well at the Centre with the good energy left behind by Guruprasad. In the absence of Tandava Chaitanya, who is in France for the Sadhana Intensive, Narayan of Sao Paulo assisted the running of the Centre.     TTC Italy: On Sunday evening we inaugurated 15 students into the Yoga Teachers Training Course. This year the course is being held in Borgo Paola near Lago Bracciano (about an hour North from Rome). We have rented this retreat location which has rooms and space for tents and features a large, round hall with glass on all walls. This allows us to have asanas, Satsangs and lectures indoors while still enjoying the views of nature surrounding us. The property is adjacent to a public forest with footpaths for silent walks. We are blessed to have clear blue skies and a good group of karma yogis from Rome and Milan who helped to transform Borgo Paola into an Ashram in time for the student's arrival! Swami Sankarananda has quickly found all the best markets, organized the kitchen, and is keeping us well fed with sattvic ahara.

    The second week of the TTC Italy course went well as we continued to enjoy the exceptionally warm and dry weather. The students continued to work very hard to prepare for their practice teaching and to absorb the philosophy, Gita, and chanting lessons. Our numbers swelled as we were joined by many guests during this week of "Ferragosto" - traditionally the peak of the Italian summer holidays. We were happy to see Sivananda teachers from many areas of Italy bring their families to participate in the collective Sadhana. Karma Yogis Luigi and Anjaneya also joined us from Rome.

    During August we continued with our meditations and study of chapter 6 of the Bhagavad Gita with Gajananam. Narayan continued teaching chair asanas at a local assisted living facility for elderly and disabled folks. He was also invited to teach introductory yoga workshops to teenagers at the Jewish Family and Children's Services facilities in San Francisco and Marin. The staff were also currently responding to 40+ new letters from incarcerated people and students reaching out to us via the Prison Yoga Project. Pranams to all from San Francisco Centre.

    During August the summer holiday season continued with a heatwave over 40℃ in some parts of Japan. Kids yoga class started on Wednesday mornings, and a Mom's class changed time from afternoon to morning. 
    The furnitures donated to the Centre by an ex-full time staff, Maunika, arrived on Wednesday - two cupboards and a bigger refrigerator, which were much needed... The moving went swiftly and smoothly with the help of karma yogis. We continued the process of cleaning and tidying up the office area. One Sunday, the last in the series of Jyotish workshops was held, with a good number of students. A trial class was also popular, with six people joining the membership. Pranams to all.

    During August we started a Yoga 2,  at 8 - 9.30 pm on  Tuesdays & Thursdays with Durairaj teaching. We also offered a Pranayama 2 course with Masao. The weather continued to be good. The attendance to classes and Satsang was moderate. A few Karma Yogis joined in on the August holiday weekend to do some painting work in the Centre. We painted the entrance and the deck doors and windows in the Shiva Hall. Guyanese food was prepared by one of the students, and it was enjoyed by all who came. Five teachers from the recent TTC started to assist the asana classes. We hoped they continue to teach here at the Centre. Karuna just returned from the Yoga Camp after almost a month there, and will be here teaching and helping us out. Karna was here teaching a few classes. All his old students were happy to see him and attended his classes. On his depaarture we wished him well, and hope to see him again next year. Prahladaji came in from the Yoga Camp with a few karma yogis from Camp to paint the two big Yoga Halls. Joined by Centre staff and the job was finished within few hours. Om.

    During August the rains played hide and seek for a few days, then returned in full measure. We started two Beginners Y1 class in with a reasonable number of participants. All other classes continued as usual. One Saturday, we conducted a Kriya workshop which was well attended. We participated in the Sunday Satsang led by Ravi Easwaran. "Chingamasam" a very auspicious month in the Malayalam calendar began on 17th August 2013. Chingamasam heralds the beginning of the new year (1189) in the Malayalam calendar. We had Ganapathy Homa in the morning on the same day. Onam, a major festival of Kerala, was celebrated during August. A Headstand workshop was conducted, plus an evening meditation review workshop. One Sunday, we had Satsang led by Mataji from Neyyar Dam Ashram. Our prayers for and good wishes to each member of the Sivananda family. Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi.

    During August the heat in Vienna reached its climax with up to 40° C. Nevertheless a considerable number of students took classes and courses. Asana rooms were well equipped with fans, a mobile AC had been installed in the office so temperatures in the Centre were quite agreeable. Ishwara went to Orleans on Wednesday for the Aniversary celebrations, on Sunday Swami Karunananda came from Reith, completing the Vienna staff after the departure of Swami Vidyananda. Several Karmayogis supported the Centre very well during the week. A Yoga 1 course started which was very well attended. On Thursday (Assumption Day) there was a public holiday in Austria, so we had 4 Satsangs this week with several newcomers taking part. The trial class on Thursday had - though it was a holiday - a remarkable number of participants. On the weekend we had a cooking course Vegetarian Breakfast Dishes. Many new recipes were prepared to the joy of participants and staff. In the afternoon we had an Introduction into Thought Power, which also was well attended. Swami Karunananda had a good start, adapting herself well to the new rhythm of the Centre. Swami Mangalananda arrived on Monday morning for a private visit to the Centre until Friday morning. Energy was gentle and cheerful, students and teachers enjoying being at the Centre. OM.

    During August two Yoga 1 courses started. Despite the holiday time one of them is big - it has 12 very inspired students. This week we were organizing and preparing everything for the Yoga retreat which starts on Monday. On Saturday we organized one more small successfull Asana photo session. We are very glad that for the new Vilnius Brochure on which we are working at the moment, will have nice pictures with the students from our Centre. On Saturday in occasion of upcoming Swami Durgananda's birthday we had a very nice Satsang. Swamijis article from latest Yoga life was read in Lithuanian language and mentally we sent to Swamiji best wishes - health and strength on the Path. On Sunday Ishwara Chaitanya left to Orleans. Next two weeks Durgadevi with the help of the teachers and Karma yogis will take care of Yoga Centre. Because of the retreat and the Assumption day, this week Yoga Centre worked only 4 days. Yoga teachers nicely took care of the Centre and taught open classes and courses. We had a very nice inspiring retreat all the week. On Wednesday Swami Vasudevanandaji came to lead the retreat. Swamiji gave inspiring Satsangs and  lectures and taught asana classes.  Students  could also enjoy the sauna,  sports, silent walks. We also had very good cooks, serving fullheartedly  sattvic tasty meals. Ishwara Chaitanya left to Orleans to help teach the Sadhana Intensive course. Peace and Pranams to all the Sivananda Family.
