Om Namah Sivaya, Blessed Self,
By the grace of Master and the blessings of Swamiji we are happy to inform you that
the Sivananda Organization has bought an Ashram in Uttarkashi. The location of this
property is just across the river from the present Sivananda Ashram. The land is as
extensive as our existing Ashram across the Ganga. The property is in requirement of
attention and repairs. Slowly we will improve the buildings over time. At present the
intention is to develop it as a Sadhana place for the Organization. Please send your
thoughts & blessings towards this new place.
May Master and Swamiji's blessings be with us always.
Prem and Om
Swami Mahadevananda
The initial stages in Sadhana will be one of ups and downs. Obstacles and unfavourable
circumstances are God-sent chances to make you more steady and strong in will.

SIVANANDA YOGA FAQ
| Q. |
"How do you train your disciples for quick spiritual success?" |
| A. |
As a drastic measure to overhaul the vicious worldly Samskaras, I ask the students to drown themselves in active service for some months or years. The period of training varies according to the evolution of the students. They must know cooking, washing, and nursing of the sick. They must serve the Sadhus and the Sannyasins in every possible way. Side by side they must be able to learn all the Yogic exercises, concentration, Japa, meditation, etc. They must be able to write essays on philosophy and Yoga. They must do Kirtan and deliver lectures also. I teach them on all these points. I give them lessons in the treatment of some ordinary diseases. When I find that the students are able to control their senses and advance in concentration and meditation and when I find that they have developed all the Sattvic qualities, I send them to cool places with instructions for deep meditation.
All that you are is the result of what you have thought.

HATHA YOGA TIP
Vacation
Sw. Sivananda did not believe in holidaying. Change of work is rest for him. Nishkamya Seva, with Narayana Bhav, is itself the highest form of meditation.
Belief determines conduct. Thought determines character. A person of perverted mind or a doubting person will not receive the spiritual knowledge.

YOGA SANSKRIT GLOSSARY
NISHKAMYA SEVA Or "Nishkamya Karma", is the unselfish performance of the duties of Life (swadharma). It is the first step towards the attainment of the final beatitude of life.
NARAYANA BHAV Subjective state of being (existence); attitude of mind; mental attitude or feeling; state of realization in the heart or mind to be one with Lord Narayana - Lord Vishnu
NAVARATHRI The nine days of worship of Devi, or the Divine Mother, in the form of Maha-Kali, Maha-Lakshmi and Maha-Saraswati. These nine days of triumph are offered to the Mother for Her successful struggle with the formidable demons led by Sumbha and Nisumbha. Navaratri is divided into sets of 3 three days to adore diffeÂrent aspects of the Supreme Goddess. In its cosmic aspect it epitomizes the stages of the evolution of Man into God, from Jivahood to Sivahood.
The Divine Mother, Supreme Shakti of Brahman, has to operate through the aspirant. On the first three days Mother is adored as Power, Force - Durga the Terrible. You pray to Mother Durga to destroy all your impurities, your vices, your defects. She is to fight with and annihilate the baser animal qualities in the Sadhaka, the lower Asura in his nature. Also, She is the Power that protects your Sadhana from its many dangers and pitfalls. Thus, the first three days aim is to worship of the Destructive aspect of the Mother, Durga, marking the first stage of destruction of Mala (impurities) plus, embody the determined effort of the sadhaka to rout out the evil Vasanas, propensities and old habits in the mind.
The next step is to build a sublime spiritual personality, to acquire positive qualities in place of the eliminated Asuric qualities. The Divine qualities, Daivi Sampat, "Divine wealth", that Lord Krishna enumerates in the Gita, have to be acquired. The Sadhaka must cultivate and develop all the auspicious qualities. He has to pile up immense spiritual wealth to enable him to pay the price for the rare gem of divine wisdom (Jnanaratna). If this development of the opposite qualities (Pratipaksha Bhavana) is not undertaken in right earnest, the old Asuric nature will raise its head again and again. Hence, this stage is as important in an aspirant's career as the previous one. This stage of the aspirant's Sadhana is depicted by the worship of Mother Lakshmi. She bestows on Her devotees the inexhaustible wealth of Daivi Sampat. Lakshmi is the Sampat-Dayini aspect of Brahman. She is Purity Itself. Thus worship of Goddess Lakshmi is performed during the second set of three days.
Once the aspirant succeeds in routing out the evil propensities and in developing Sattvic, pure qualities, he becomes an Adhikari. He is ready now to receive the Light of Supreme Wisdom. He is fit to obtain Divine Knowledge. At this stage comes the devout worship of Sri Sarasvati, Who is Divine Knowledge personiÂfied, the Embodiment of Brahmajnana. The sound of Her celestial Veena awakens the notes of the sublime Mahavakyas and the Pranava. She bestows the Knowledge of the Supreme Naada and then gives full Atmajnana as represenÂted by Her pure dazzling snow-white apparel. To propitiate Sri Sarasvati, the Giver of Jnana, is therefore the third stage.
The tenth day--Vijaya Dasami--marks the triÂumphant ovation of the Jiva at having attained Jivanmukti through the descent of knowledge by the grace of Goddess Sarasvati. The Jiva rests in His own Supreme Self of Sat-Chit-Ananda (Existence-knowledge-Bliss Absolute). This day celebrates the victory, the achievement of the Goal. The Banner of Victory flies aloft. Lo! I am He! I am He!!
Chidananda rupah sivoham, sivoham chidananda rupah sivoham, sivoham
VIJAYADASAMI Vijayadasami is the crowning day of the success of Vidya shakti over the negative lower nature of nescience. See NAVARATHRI above.
PRAHLADA Prahlada is a character from the Puranic texts of Hinduism, wherein he is famed for his exclusive devotion (bhakti) to Vishnu, despite attempts in the story by his father, Hiranyakashipu to turn him to the contrary. The story of Prahlada gives a number of moral instructions: God will always save his devotees, constant faith in God leads to devotion.
DHRUVA Dhruva was an ardent young devotee of Vishnu. He was a prince blessed to eternal existence and glory as the Pole Star in the constellations. The story of Dhruva's life is often told to Hindu children as an example for perseverance, devotion, steadfastness and fearlessness.
As is your desire, so is your will. As is your will, so is your action. He who is desire-less will have an absolute free-will.

SIVANANDA WORLD NEWS
Sivananda Ashram Yoga Camp, Val Morin, Quebec, CanadaOm Namah Sivaya!
In early September we are experiencing some extended brilliant summer days while the 30 students of the TTC started off comfortably. The camp still received lots of guests. Local student numbers increased. We had a visit from Sachdev and his wife who came for a short holiday and surprised the students by offering to play flute during one of the meditations. We also had a wonderful Sarangi concert by Aruna Narayan Kalle who has performed here before, which is always a blessing. The summer went well with many outside visitors and well-attended courses.
In mid-September all is well at the camp though summer days are over and heavy frosts have begu. The Canada geese have been heard in the skies, flying in formation Southward, signaling to us that winter is approaching. The TTC went well. Mantra Initiation saw nearly all students taking part. We celebrated Swami Mahadevananda's 69th birthday with a wonderful party started with a Pada Puja where may local and temple devotees came to pay their respects. Dr Spunt, Mr Trager also attended the joyous celebration which went into the evening. Pranams.

In early September there was a beautiful Puja with abhishekam during the morning Satsang to began the month. With the celebration of Swami Sivananda's birthday being further celebrated with Akhanda Kirtan of Om Namo Bhagavate throughout the day and a feast on banana leaf for brunch. The guests that went on the Kanya Kumari trip one Friday were further exposed to the local culture. The usual visits to temples and the Vivekananda rock were of even more interest than usual. Children's games were taking place for Onam Festival outside the ancient Adi Keshava Temple (Lord Vishnu reclining just as at the Padmanabhava Temple in Trivandrum) and the temple statues at Suchindran were being paraded around the temple with a flock devotees following. These guests were also treated to a beautiful sunset. Meanwhile at Neyyar Dam it was raining as it had done lately. However, for the Onam parades and festivities the sun was out in full. Almost all the guests joined in the parade of which the Ashram was a part, walking along with an elephant in front and Kathakali dancers behind! Sunday was a necessary day of rest with proper exercise, proper breathing, proper... Ashley returned to the Ashram to continue her service with a new visa. Kunjamon went home on his way to Chennai.
In mid-September a new batch of yoga vacationers arrived which included a group of 15 students from an international school at Kodai Canal, a hill station in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. This group of mostly Korean teenagers' utilized this school field trip as an occasion for exploring yoga. They stayed for 5 days. Preparations for our hi-season began in the form of small and medium levels of repairs & maintenance, keeping the staff busy. As the weather is mostly been dry, we took the opportunity to walk up the Kaliparra hill, with the clear morning skies allowing sight of beautiful sunrise and panorama of the Neyyar Dam waters with the forested mountains in the background, the guests were happy to have made the effort to get there. May Swamiji and Masters continue to bless and guide us. Om Shanti.

Two new wooden garages were constructed to house the Ashram car and our tractor. Work to create two new pathways through the Ashram woods is almost completed. The paths will be lit by lamps, providing the opportunity for evening strolls within the grounds. We were happy to welcome Swami Sivadasananda who surprised us with a visit on Ganesha's birthday. He led a beautiful Puja ceremony, explaining to us the symbolism behind Ganesha. The celebration of Master's birthday with a Puja and abishekham uplifted the spiritual vibration further.
