SIVANANDA YOGA FAQ
| Q. |
"Why has God created the world?"
|
| A. |
Ask God why he has created this world! Attain wisdom of the Self.
Then you will know why God created the world. You cannot understand it with your intellect.
You can understand it only with intuition.
For the sake of sport, God created the world. 'Lokavattu Lila Kaivalyam'. Creation of the world
has a purpose. Just as we cannot have a sun without rays, similarly, we cannot have God
without the world process. The world is like his rays. It is his Svabhava, nature. Just as a
juggler produces something and makes it disappear, so also, God produces this world and
makes it disappear. God is omnipotent. To ask why he created the world is an Ati-prasna,
a transendental question. We will be only wasting time by discussing it. Before asking about
the world, ask about yourself. Know who you are, then you will know everything.

HATHA YOGA TIP
Forward Bend Variation
Sit down with your knees bent in to your chest. Hold your toes and lean back a little way,
balancing on your buttocks. Slowly straighten your legs, bringing your thighs to your chest
and drawing your head and spine up toward your feet. To develop your abdominal muscles,
try raising your legs with your hands - palms down - by your side.

VEGETARIAN CUISINE
Hindustani Halva
Semolina is one of the most common prasad ingredients, linked with religious ceremonies
such as the 9-night of 'Navaratri' in October. Halva is often served warm as a breakfast treat.
Serves 16-20
Ingredients
- 200g (7oz) course semolina
- 50g (2oz) unsalted butter
- 50g (2oz) cashew nut pieces (optional)
- 200g (7oz) brown sugar
- 250ml (8fl oz) water
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 50g (2oz) raisins (optional)
Preparation
- Toast the semolina in a hot dry frying pan over a high heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly until it turns light brown and gives off a nutty aroma.
- Stir in the butter and set aside.
- If using cashew nuts, roast them in a hot dry pan until slightly browned and set aside.
- Put the sugar and water in a pan and bring to the boil.
- Reduce the heat and mix in the semolina, ground cardamom and the raisins and cashew nut pieces, if using.
- Continue to cook, stirring continuously, until the mixture has thickened.
- Remove from the heat and spread the mixture evenly on a serving plate. Leave to cool, then score into diamond shapes to make serving easier.
- Serve with a spoon.

SIVANANDA WORLD NEWS
Sivananda Ashram, Nassu, Bahamas:
We have had an amazing and intoxicating week of incredible devotional chanting with
Krishna Das and Ty, accompanied by nightly Puja with beautiful Yantras for the different
Deities given by Tantric Priest, Krishnan Namboodiri that has only increased our Bhakti and
thirst for the Divine Absolute. All week long our Satsangs have been fully attended by over
250 Guests, TTC’s, Staff and Nassau residents, all participating joyfully with raised voices
and uplifted spirits. This week we are truly blessed to welcome Nischala Joy Devi and
Baskara Deva with the ‘Healing Path of Yoga’. Nischala has many wonderful and heart
warming stories to tell of successes with heart disease patients and cancer sufferers.
We are now coming up to the final week of the January TTC and the students are all fully
integrated into our community with many deciding to stay on. They are walking around with
shining eyes and looking intensely studious as the final days approach. Our gardens are
looking so beautiful with Danielle Laberge’s work continuing every day there are new flower
beds or trees being planted and the flowers are blooming wonderfully due to careful, loving,
attention of staff. Om Shanti
Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch, Woodbourne, NY, USA:
Our freezing weather continues unabated. We have so much ice that we purchased a few
sets of crampons to give the staff some confidence in walking around and counter potential
disasters. Due to the weather conditions the ashram is quieter than usual, perfect for the staff
to do more sadhana. A small, but eager, group of guests participated in a "The Art of Meditation"
weekend. Our cows are freezing too but seem to handle it alright - better than us!
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram, Neyyar Dam, India:
The TTC continues in earnest, this week consisted of a silent walk, a talk on Ayurveda from
Dr Haridas, Kriyas and a trip to Kanya Kumari. Of course the week would not be complete
without the talent show on Saturday night, and this week's really was the best yet! The Siva
Hall was filled with lots of energy and excitement as we were treated to beautiful poems,
singing and dancing. The evening ended with some rapturous bajans from Doctor Haridas
and the students on the AMC, with Kapoorji leading the way with the dancing! Sunday morning
was an early start as we climbed up Kalippara and in the evening we were treated to a martial
arts demonstration from Cochin regulars Kalaripayatu. This week we look forward to the arrival
of Dr Brian O' Leary and his wife Meredith, and Dr Amit Goswami and Uma Krishnamoorti.
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Zentrum, Berlin, Germany:
We had a beautiful 7-day program of philosophy, Yoga and Indian Ragas. The
program was very well attended by a mixed group of teachers, close students and new
students as well. Ram and Sita came from Hamburg bringing along a few sincere students.
Everyday the following program took place: Asana workshops were taught by
Swami Sivadasananda, Swami Krishnadevananda and Narayan Chaitanya. Swami
Durgananda, Swami Sivadasananda and Swami Atmaramananda gave inspiring practical
lectures on various Yoga and Philosophy topics. Every evening ended with elevating Kathas
from the Srimad Bhagavatam rendered by Sri Venugopal Goswami who also sang
soul-stirring Ragas and Bhajans. After each program a Bhandara was offered to all. After
one week of the intense practice of Karma, Bhakti and Jnana Yoga, the center is now vibrating
with Shakti and all the staff filled with Joy and the desire to dive into the service of the Masters.
