Jai Singh Ghera Ashram

Jai Sing Ghera Ashram, the venue of the Bhagavata recitation is the former sadhana (spiritual) residence of King Jai Singh of Jaipur. Today it is an Ashram of the over 500 years old Goswami-Vaishnava-tradition of the Sri Radha Raman Temple, one of the oldest temples of Vrindavan, which is in close proximity of the Ashram.

Jai Singh Ghera lies directly on the banks of the holy Yamuna river. The Ashram is next to bathing gaths and several temples. Nearby you can see pilgrims, colourful boats, sadhus and villagers.

Anuloma Viloma on roof terrace

The Ashram is a spiritual oasis with a well kept lawn and exquisite temple gardens where pandits recite the scriptures daily. The ancient palace walls offer picturesque views of the pilgrim road, old royal palaces, and vast fields on the opposite banks of the river.

Guest rooms with fan and attached bathroom are found on top of a large auditorium built in the classical Rajastan style. Asana classes will be taught on roof terraces overlooking the houses of Vrindavan. The large open air Mandapam regularly hosts seven-days scriptural recitals.

Bhakti Yoga Master Sri Venugopal Goswami grew up in this Ashram, which is entirely dedicated to the teachings of the ancient yogic scripture Srimad Bhagavata. It is a unique experience to be able to hear a Bhagavata Saptaha recital in English amidst this palatial setting.

The spiritual wealth of Vrindavan's hundreds of temples permeate the atmosphere. Ashram staff will be there to guide us and to explain about the most important places.

Ras Lila Dance Theatre

Beauty of India

A special attraction is the Ras Lila Dance Theatre, in which young boys enact the ancient teachings of the divine stories of Lord Krishna coupled with folk humour and live music.

Vrindavan is located 150 km from Delhi and can be reached in 2 hours on Highway NH2, one of the most modern roads of India. Agra and the Taj Mahal are just 30 km away.

March 1st to March 10th, 2009

North Indian Pilgrimage: Delhi/ Hardwar/ Rishikesh/ Uttarkashi
Temples, Ashrams and the Divine Life Society

Swami Atmaramananda, director of the Sivananda Yoga Centre in Berlin will lead this pilgrimage

Hardwar

The old temple city of Hardwar at the feet of the Himalayas is renowned for the Kumba Mela, which is celebrated every 12 years when hundreds of thousands of devotees take a ritual purifying bath in the divine Ganga, a living symbol of the nectar of immortality. The lofty thoughts of many great saints elevate the atmosphere and the evening Ganga Arati is an unforgettable event.

We will visit Rishikesh, some miles upstream, where Sri Swami Sivananda spent almost four decades of tapas (austerities) and from where the message of Yoga has reached the whole world. We will have Satsang at Sivananda Ashram, Headquarters of the Divine Life Society, and invoke the living presence of Master and Swamiji. We will meditate and pray for inner guidance at Ananda Kutir, Master 's cottage by the Ganga, and visit His Mahasamadhi Shrine, the sanctuary where his body has been placed.

Sivananda Kutir in Netala, Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi is a famous Himalayan town which has been for many decades the residence of hundreds of Sadhus from all over India. This is where Swami Vishnudevananda, then a young Swami at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh, came to do intense Sadhana for a period of several months.

In 1991, Swami Vishnudevananda established a unique Ashram, Sivananda Kutir, in Netala, 8 km north of Uttarkashi. It is situated just a few metres from the Ganga river, in the midst of majestic Himalayan mountains. In this beautiful setting with its elevating natural vibrations we will dive into our practice of Asanas, Pranayama and Meditation. We will also have the opportunity to have Darshan at the ancient Siva temple in the town of Uttarkashi.

One or two days will be spent in Delhi to have Satsang at the Sivananda Yoga Centre, enjoy ayurvedic massages, and to have Darshan at the Kalkaji Devi Temple and the South Indian Ayappa Temple. Shopping possibilities include the 'Emporiums' which display the best handicrafts from all the States of India, spiritual bookshops as well as musical instruments shops.
